Welcome to Class 2

Welcome to Class 2! Miss Longland is the class teacher and Mrs Devonish and Mrs Pontin provide learning support.

In our class, we believe that it is really important to always try our best with every piece of work that we do and we always strive to have a positive attitude towards our learning. We enjoy practical and stimulating lessons where we learn in a group with our friends or on our own through individual activities.

Weekly tasks:

1.) Spelling tests – once a week, children are tested on 20 spellings. Each week, children are given 5 new words to learn which they are tested on the following week along with the most recently learnt 15 spellings. The idea behind this is to allow children to learn a set of 5 words over 4 weeks which will support their learning of the spelling rule.

2.) Times tables tests – once a week, children are tested on the times tables they are currently working on. Children have to be able to complete the times tables in order, out of order and they also need to know the divisions for them before they are moved on to the next times table. The end of Key Stage 1 expectation is that children know their 2, 10 and 5 times tables so all children start with their 2 times table and then work progressively through them.

3.) Reading – we really value the importance of reading at this stage in children’s primary education to support their phonic knowledge and reading ability. We expect all children to read at least 3 times a week at home and we hear the children read throughout the week during school time as regularly as possible.

Topic for the term:

Our topic for this term is ‘A Taste of France’! In art we will be exploring the works of famous artists like Monet, Van Gogh and Seurat and we will be looking at the different techniques they used which we will try to replicate. In music we will be singing ‘Frere Jacques’ and we will learn how to play the tune on instruments such as recorders and xylophones. In our geography lessons we will learn about the continents and oceans of the world as well as learning about where France is and what it is like. We will also use this opportunity to learn some French vocabulary during this topic!
